Active Harmonic Filtration Study
What is an Active Harmonic Filtration Study?
Active Harmonic Filtration (AHF) study is quite simply a study that determines harmonics of an electrical network and from the output the study, this will suggest how to improve upon and rectify the possible damaging amalgamation of harmonics on the network.
In all our years of building services industry we here at ElecSpec would advise that a harmonic study is completed once the building is fully up and running, therefore the contractors/builders have all left as this is the best way to evaluate the concept. This can be completed before but good knowledge on the network and all its components have to be known. I would have thought the only reasoning behind this would if there were particular components that we known to give certain harmonic outputs or the incoming network was known to have levels intolerable by the

infrastructure implemented. In these cases, I would expect the particular components to have local AHF and in the case of the incoming we would advise that we would still be tempted to wait and complete a survey as this will highlight the whole concept instead of just incoming, however, we appreciate this is not always achievable.
If you would like a study commissioned for complete network, this is completed simply by connecting onto existing CT's (or the implementers own CT's) typically on the Main LV Switchboard or on a particular piece of equipment if required and study the harmonics over a weeks period, or as necessary. Achieving a gauge of your network and from that, the report will detail exactly what should be implemented to improve the harmonics of the network. That's it, simples, just need to install the AHF if required.
