What is a Power Factor Correction Study?

A Power Factor Correction (PFC) study is quite simply a study that determines how much a Power Factor (PF) of a building and from the output the study will suggest how to improve upon its current rating, 1.0 being unity and the best power factor.

In all my years of LV Switchboards we have never commissioned a PFC study and if you are certainly here from a design point of view, I.E you are designing a new system, I would advise not to go for a study and put some in, click here to find out more. This simply because 90% of the time, the study costs the same, or very marginally less than the PFC itself, so its best to put it in, in our opinion.

If you would like a study commissioned for an existing network, this is completed simply by connecting a particular meter onto existing CT's (or the implementers own CT's) on your Main LV Switchboard or on a particular piece of equipment if required and study the PF over, typically a week period. Achieving a gauge of your network and from that, the report will detail exactly what should be implemented to improve the PF of a network. That's it, simples, I would like to stress again that the kit is similarly priced in most cases as the study and a good indication of your PF will be readable on most modern meters.
